If your mental energy was money, how much of it would you say you’ve given away for free this month?
I see it all the time—singers who are careful with their voices, but reckless with their emotional capital.
- One offhand comment from a peer derails their confidence for days.
- One audition that didn’t go well eats up a week of mental real estate.
- One Instagram scroll turns into a spiral of comparison and self-doubt.
Your focus, confidence, and joy in singing (and life!!)?
That’s expensive. Not everyone has earned the right to spend it.
This is what I’ve been thinking about ever since I heard Taylor drop this wisdom this week (Yes, first name only, because we’re friends, right?!)
“Think of your energy as if it’s expensive. As if it’s like a luxury item. Not everyone can afford it. Not everyone has invested in you, in order to be able to have the capital for you to care about this.”
Amen amen amen!
Just this week, I went in for an in-person audition here in Raleigh. I got a callback in the room and was asked to send in a few tapes of my own material, later that day. 😅
I could have spun out and panicked about what to send in, taped something 12 times hoping for perfection, or simply quit because of the pressure of the quick turnaround.
Instead, I picked two tapes I already had and was proud of, and then I put the song I did live that day on tape–in two takes.
See, I had already prepared! And micromanaging the next step of the process was in no universe gonna be worth my time.
In auditions or tapes, the most powerful singers are the ones who:
- Rehearse so they feel truly ready (that’s a confidence deposit)
- Declare their preparation complete instead of endlessly picking at it
- Step in intending for the first take to be the performance—because they know each take isn’t a rehearsal.
This isn’t about being perfect. I’m certainly not!
But it is about protecting your energy so you can actually enjoy the journey of being an artist, instead of crawling home emotionally bankrupt after every opportunity.
If you need tools to steady both your voice and your mindset before the big moments, my Warm-Up Series is a simple but powerful place to start.

Ten minutes, and you’re vocally (and mentally) prepped to walk into the room like the pro you are.
So—how much emotional capital do you want to have left over for the things, and people, that really matter?
