Have you ever thought to yourself:
“I must be missing something… everyone else seems to understand mix voice, but I don’t”?
You’re not alone.
In fact, I hear this exact frustration from singers all the time. 😬
It usually sounds like:
- “I don’t feel what that teacher described, so I must not be doing it right.”
- “Everyone else talks about mix like it’s a magic switch… why doesn’t mine feel that way?”
- “Maybe my voice just isn’t built for it.”
Here’s the thing: if you’ve ever felt that way, it’s not because you’re broken or because mix is some exclusive “secret.” It’s because you’ve been given directions that weren’t meant for you!
And this is where my favorite analogy comes in:
👉 Think of vocal balance—what we’re aiming for by learning to mix—as the city of Chicago.
The goal is to get to Chicago.
But one singer might be starting in New York. Another in Dallas. Another in Los Angeles.
If I hand everyone the exact same directions, only the person starting in that one location will actually arrive in Chicago.
Everyone else? Totally lost.
That’s what happens when you try to follow someone else’s one-size-fits-all mix exercise or explanation.
It doesn’t mean you’re not mixing. It doesn’t mean you can’t get there. It just means you need your own route.
So if you’ve ever thought, “Maybe I’m not doing it right,” let me reassure you:
- Your mix doesn’t have to feel like your friend’s mix, and you can use different language to describe how you perceive it.
- It doesn’t have to match what that coach on Instagram says it “should” feel like.
- What matters most is whether your voice is balanced, sustainable, and does what you need it to do.
